Understanding Pregnancy Trimesters

A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks and is grouped into three trimesters. Each trimester brings different physical and emotional changes.

First Trimester (Weeks 1-13)

The most crucial time for your baby's development. Your body goes through massive hormonal changes. Fatigue and morning sickness are very common during this stage.

Second Trimester (Weeks 14-27)

Often called the "honeymoon phase." Morning sickness usually fades, energy returns, and you will start to feel your baby move (quickening) and see your baby bump grow.

Third Trimester (Weeks 28-40)

The final stretch! Your baby is growing rapidly and getting ready for birth. You may experience physical discomforts like backache, heartburn, and Braxton Hicks contractions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How is the due date calculated?

The standard method (Naegele's rule) adds 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP). If you know your exact conception date or IVF transfer date, the calculation is adjusted for higher accuracy.

Q. How accurate is my due date?

It is just an estimate! Only about 4% to 5% of babies are born exactly on their due date. Most babies arrive sometime between 37 and 41 weeks of pregnancy.

Q. What does "Full Term" mean?

A pregnancy is considered "full term" at 37 weeks. Babies born at or after 37 weeks generally have the best health outcomes.
